SMIDS (Ships Movement Information Display System)

SMIDS is a docking system utilising GPS and GLONASS satellite technology to give an extremely accurate indication of the ship's movement over the ground. Information is presented to the Navigation Officers and Pilot in the same way as the 'traditional' doppler docking system plus in addition the ships heading and rate of turn are presented on the same display.

There is also a facility to accept speed through the water data from the ship's speed log and to compute 'total run' and 'distance' travelled.

In addition to the bridge and bridge wing readouts an optional handheld computer (PDA) with a wireless connection to the SMIDS Electronic Unit allows the data to be constantly to hand in the general bridge area.

Eiland Communications Ltd has hands on experience of this system, seen it in action and it is impressive!.

SMIDS has several advantages over a doppler docking systems.

  • no expensive upkeep of transducers which are usually only accessible at drydock
  • speed indication is not affected by disturbances in the water
  • no hull penetrations required
  • never goes out of calibration, seas trial not a necessity
  • can be installed without drydocking the ship
